Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) introduced legislation on Thursday morning that would abolish the BATFE (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) if it were signed into law.
The legislation is named after Brian Terry, the deceased Marine and Border Patrol Agent who was killed in a gunfight connected with “Fast and Furious,” being shot down by a group of armed men who were attempting to rob drug smugglers transporting illegal materials between Mexico and the U.S.
Terry was a select individual on a high-ranking Border Patrol unit that participated in “Fast and Furious,” a misguided BATFE tactic which deliberately sold weapons to known criminals with the idea that they could trace those firearms to other criminal organizations.
The legislation’s cosponsors include Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Ralph Norman (R-SC), and Paul Gosar (R-AZ).
The legislation, according to Greene’s office, would repeal all ATF regulations, guidance, etc. after August 1, 2020 to the date it’s enacted. It would end hiring at the Bureau, and abolish the Bureau at 6 months past the date of enactment. Regulatory functions surrounding Alcohol, Tobacco, and other items would be transferred back to the FBI. The ATF would be required to publish a list on their website of every confiscated firearm and lot of ammunition in their possession, which must then be sold to Federal Firearm Licensed dealers in a public auction. Money from the auction would be placed into a fund that would assist families of slain border patrol officers that are / were affected by Operation Fast and Furious, with a cap of $150,000 per affected family. Remaining funds after the year 2032 will be placed into a grant program for firearm safety programs.
Greene spoke in an interview with Daily Caller, telling them that President Biden and the Democrats are intending “to unleash the ATF” against “law-abiding gun owners,” and that “The ATF’s. . . unconstitutional attacks” against “the Second Amendment must end.”
She continued by saying that Eric Holder’s Fast and Furious program can “never be allowed to happen again,” and that furthermore, the ATF is about to be used as a tool by the Biden administration to “ban, confiscate, and destroy” America’s most popular rifle, owned by millions. This, she says, “is a clear indication” of the coming “war on gun owners” that the ATF intends to wage. She adds that eliminating the ATF will “protect all guns owners. . . from a tyrannical power hungry [agency] of bureaucrats” set on destroying the Second Amendment.
Aaron Dorr, American Firearms Association’s Executive Director said that the ATF’s elimination was long overdue.
