Former Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer praised President Donald Trump’s proposal to place illegal aliens in sanctuary cities, saying that it was “great plan.”

“When I was Governor, illegal aliens cost AZ taxpayers $1.6 billion/yr in education, health care, and incarceration costs. So, why do we continue to bear these costs when sanctuary cities encourage illegal immigration? Great plan by realDonaldTrump to utilize those cities!” Brewer tweeted on April 15.

Her comments were made in response to the president’s proposal he tweeted on April 12 to relocate immigrants who cross the southern border illegally to sanctuary cities exclusively.

“Due to the fact that Democrats are unwilling to change our very dangerous immigration laws, we are indeed, as reported, giving strong considerations to placing Illegal Immigrants in Sanctuary Cities only,” Trump wrote on Twitter.

“The Radical Left always seems to have an Open Borders, Open Arms policy—so this should make them very happy!”

When asked to clarify his plan, Trump confirmed his plans at a press conference on April 1.

“We’ll bring them to sanctuary city areas and let that particular area take care of it, whether it’s a state or whatever it might be,” Trump said.

“California certainly is always saying, ‘Oh, we want more people.’ And they want more people in their sanctuary cities. Well, we’ll give them more people. We can give them a lot. We can give them an unlimited supply, and let’s see if they’re so happy. They say we have open arms. They’re always saying they have open arms. Let’s see if they have open arms,” he added.

Sanctuary cities are locales which have enacted measures to prevent local officials from cooperating with federal immigration authorities. There are eight states and hundreds of cities across the United States which are officially sanctuaries for illegal aliens. The eight states are California, Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, and Vermont.

Democrat’s Response

In response to Trump’s proposed measure to deal with the influx of illegal aliens crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) office called the idea “despicable.” Pelosi’s hometown, San Francisco is a sanctuary city.

“The extent of this Administration’s cynicism and cruelty cannot be overstated,” Pelosi spokeswoman Ashley Etienne said in a statement on Friday, April 12. “Using human beings—including little children—as pawns in their warped game to perpetuate fear and demonize immigrants is despicable, and in some cases, criminal.”

“The American people have resoundingly rejected this Administration’s toxic anti-immigrant policies, and Democrats will continue to advance immigration policies that keep us safe and honor our values,” she added.

Earlier, Pelosi told reporters on April 12 that she was not aware of Trump’s proposal and said, “It’s just another notion that is unworthy of the presidency of the United States and disrespectful of the challenges that we face, as a country, as a people, to address who we are, a nation of immigrants.”

Similarly, Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) also criticized Trump for his plan, calling it “morally repugnant” and “probably illegal.”

“What the President is talking about here is spending taxpayer dollars to use immigrant families—mothers, fathers, and young children—as pawns for political retribution. This is both morally repugnant and probably illegal,” Nadler tweeted on April 12.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said that he plans to sue the Trump administration, calling the plan illegal.

Trump replied to the Democrat backlash, asking that if “radical left Democrats” no longer want illegal migrants in their cities then “why should others be expected to take them into their communities?”

“If the Radical Left Democrats all of a sudden don’t want the Illegal Migrants in their Sanctuary Cities (no more open arms), why should others be expected to take them into their communities? Go home and come into our Country legally and through a system of Merit,” the president tweeted.

The Washington Post first reported the story two days prior to Trump’s tweets said the White House had proposed the measure at least twice in the past six months, citing unnamed officials at the Department of Homeland Security and emails that the Post reviewed.
